Djebena

This is the third location of the East-African restaurant that started in Leiden in 2008. It’s delicious, fairly authentic and their food even has some spice.

Food

It bills itself as East African, but the cuisine is otherwise referred to as Horn of Africa cuisine, encompassing Ethiopia, Eritrea and Somalia. Offerings range from a number of different stews made from lentils and vegetables to different kinds of meats served on a large piece of spongy bread and eaten with the hands.

The menu allows you to order a number of dishes but the best option is to ask the server to put together a platter of dishes and share with the table. You can ask for vegetarian or non-vegetarian, as well as make other requests.

Ambiance

It’s located on the main market square and does have a bit of a tourist trap vibe, but don’t let that scare you away.

Service

The waitstaff is friendly though not incredibly efficient. They are happy to answer your questions about the food.

Extras

There are no English-language menus. Plenty of vegetarian options.

Dinner will cost around €25 per person.
